Double cleansing — using an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser — is the foundational step of Korean skincare. It sounds like more work, but it's actually a more efficient and less damaging approach to cleansing than the single-step methods most Western routines rely on. The principle is simple chemistry: oil dissolves oil, water dissolves water. No single cleanser can effectively remove both lipid-soluble and water-soluble impurities without being so aggressive that it damages the skin barrier in the process.
The problem with single-step cleansing
Most Western cleansers are formulated with surfactants strong enough to remove both oil-based and water-based impurities in a single step. To achieve this, they typically use high concentrations of sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulphate (SLES) — anionic surfactants that are highly effective at removing oils but also strip the skin's natural lipid barrier. A 2010 study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science demonstrated that SLS-based cleansers significantly increase TEWL (transepidermal water loss) for up to six hours after washing, leaving the barrier compromised and the skin vulnerable to irritation and dehydration. The tight, squeaky-clean feeling many people associate with a 'good cleanse' is actually a sign of barrier damage.
Step one — the oil cleanser
An oil-based cleanser — available as a balm, cleansing oil, or micellar oil — works on the principle of like-dissolves-like. Plant and mineral oils bind to sebum, SPF filters, silicones, and oil-based makeup, lifting them from the skin without the need for aggressive surfactants. The key technique is the massage: apply to dry skin and work in circular motions for a full 60 seconds before adding water. The massage itself has benefits beyond cleansing — it stimulates lymphatic drainage, improves microcirculation, and increases the absorption of subsequent products. When water is added, the oil emulsifies and rinses away cleanly, taking the dissolved impurities with it. The skin's acid mantle remains intact.
Step two — the water-based cleanser
The second cleanse removes water-soluble impurities — sweat, environmental pollutants, and any residue from the oil cleanser — using a gentle, low-pH foam or gel. The critical specification is pH: the skin's acid mantle sits at pH 4.5–5.5, and cleansers formulated above pH 7 disrupt it, triggering a cascade of barrier dysfunction. Korean water-based cleansers are typically formulated at pH 5–6, using milder amino acid-based surfactants (sodium cocoyl glutamate, sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate) that clean effectively without stripping. A 2014 study in the British Journal of Dermatology confirmed that low-pH cleansers produce significantly less irritation and TEWL increase than alkaline alternatives, even after repeated use.
Morning vs evening — do you need both steps?
In the morning, your skin has not been exposed to SPF, makeup, or environmental pollution — it has only produced a small amount of sebum overnight. A single gentle water-based cleanse is sufficient for most skin types in the AM. Over-cleansing in the morning is one of the most common causes of dehydration and sensitivity, particularly in dry or combination skin types. Reserve the double cleanse for the evening, when you need to remove the full day's accumulation of SPF, pollution, and sebum. The exception is if you sleep with a thick occlusive or sleeping mask — in that case, a gentle oil cleanse in the morning helps remove the residue without stripping.
Choosing the right oil cleanser for your skin type
Not all oil cleansers are equal. For oily or acne-prone skin, choose a lightweight cleansing oil with non-comedogenic oils (jojoba, squalane, mineral oil) and avoid heavy plant butters that can clog pores. For dry or sensitive skin, a balm cleanser with a higher proportion of emollient oils (rosehip, marula, argan) will provide additional nourishment during the cleanse. For all skin types, avoid oil cleansers that contain fragrance — the cleansing step involves massage and heat, which increases skin permeability and the potential for fragrance sensitisation. The best oil cleansers emulsify completely with water, leaving no greasy residue.
The evidence for double cleansing
While large-scale randomised controlled trials specifically on double cleansing are limited — it's difficult to fund cosmetic research without a pharmaceutical sponsor — the mechanistic evidence is strong. Studies on SPF removal consistently show that oil-based cleansers remove sunscreen more completely than water-based cleansers alone, which is clinically significant given that incomplete SPF removal leads to cumulative UV damage. Studies on barrier function consistently show that low-pH, mild surfactant cleansers preserve the acid mantle better than single-step high-pH alternatives. The double cleanse combines both advantages: thorough removal of lipid-soluble impurities (step one) with barrier-preserving gentle cleansing (step two).
