Glass skin — 유리 피부 (yuri pibu) in Korean — describes a complexion so smooth, hydrated, and luminous it resembles a pane of glass. The term was coined by Korean beauty editor Ellie Choi and went viral globally around 2017, but the practice behind it is decades older, rooted in the Korean philosophy that skin health is built slowly, through consistent layering rather than correction.
The science of luminosity
Luminous skin is not about shimmer — it's about light scattering. Healthy skin has a smooth, intact stratum corneum (the outermost barrier layer) that reflects light evenly. When the barrier is compromised — through dehydration, over-exfoliation, or environmental stress — the surface becomes uneven and light scatters diffusely, creating a dull, flat appearance. The goal of glass skin is to restore and maintain that barrier so light bounces back cleanly. Research published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology confirms that transepidermal water loss (TEWL) is the primary driver of barrier dysfunction. Keeping TEWL low — through humectants, emollients, and occlusives layered in the correct order — is the foundation of every glass skin routine.
Step 1 — Double cleanse
Begin with an oil-based cleanser to dissolve SPF, sebum, and makeup. Massage for 60 seconds, then emulsify with water and rinse. Follow immediately with a gentle water-based foam or gel cleanser to remove any residue. This two-step process, backed by dermatological consensus, removes surface debris without stripping the acid mantle — the slightly acidic film (pH 4.5–5.5) that protects the skin microbiome. A good essence is lighter than a serum but more concentrated than a toner — typically fermented, which increases bioavailability of active ingredients. Galactomyces ferment filtrate (found in SK-II's iconic Facial Treatment Essence) has been shown in clinical studies to improve skin texture, radiance, and moisture retention. Snail secretion filtrate — another K-beauty staple — contains glycoproteins, hyaluronic acid, and allantoin, and has demonstrated wound-healing and anti-inflammatory properties in peer-reviewed research. Step 5 — Serum and ampoule
Target specific concerns here. For glass skin, niacinamide (vitamin B3) at 5–10% is the gold-standard ingredient: it reduces pore appearance, evens skin tone, strengthens the barrier, and has an excellent safety profile across all skin types. Step 6 — Sheet mask (2–3× per week)
Sheet masks deliver a concentrated dose of actives under occlusion — the mask itself acts as a physical barrier that prevents evaporation, forcing ingredients deeper into the skin. Leave on for 15–20 minutes; do not exceed 30 minutes, as the mask can begin to draw moisture back out of the skin once it dries. Pat remaining essence into skin after removal — never rinse.
